Destinations in Guatemala:

Lake Izabal

Lake Izabal, Guatemala's largest lake, attracts Guatemalans and international visitors alike with its clear waters and lush tropical vegetation. The lake is easy to reach by boat via the Rio Dulce and visitors can Enjoy this beautiful Lake on our sailing tours

The area's principal attraction is the Castillo de San Felipe de Lara, an old Spanish fortress that was originally built in 1595 to protect the trade route to Spain from English and Dutch pirates. Despite the fortifications, though, the Castillo was repeatedly taken and destroyed by the pirates. Over the following two centuries it was rebuilt and expanded several times until the pirate threat ceased at the end of the 18th and the Castillo was abandoned.

Castillo San Felipe was restored in 1955-56 according to original construction plans and has since become the most important tourist spot on the shores of Lake Izabal.
